Did you know that your phone is equipped with a 3D magnetometer? With phyphox, you can harness the sensors on your phone to perform a variety of measurements and experiments. Whether you want to measure the Earth's local gravitational acceleration using your phone as a pendulum, or turn it into a sonar, phyphox has got you covered.
phyphox provides access to your phone's sensors through a user-friendly interface. You can choose from a selection of pre-defined experiments and start collecting data with just a press of a button. The app also allows you to export both raw data and analyzed results in widely used formats for further analysis.
What sets phyphox apart is its versatility and flexibility. Not only can you use the app's pre-defined experiments, but you can also define your own experiments using the web editor available on phyphox.org. This allows you to select sensor inputs, define analysis steps, and create customized views. From basic calculations to advanced analysis methods like Fourier transforms and crosscorrelation, phyphox provides a comprehensive toolbox of analysis functions.
As for connectivity, phyphox offers remote control of experiments through a web interface. This means you can control your experiment from any PC on the same network as your phone, without needing to install additional software on those PCs. All you need is a modern web browser.
Supported sensors include accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, light intensity, pressure, microphone, proximity, and GPS. It is worth noting that not all sensors may be present on every phone.
When it comes to exporting data, phyphox supports commonly used formats such as CSV (Comma separated values), CSV (Tab-separated values), and Excel. If you require other formats, the developers are open to feedback and suggestions.
phyphox was developed at the 2nd Institute of Physics A at the RWTH Aachen University.
The app requests certain permissions, and here is an explanation of why:
- Internet: This permission is necessary for phyphox to access online resources and load experiments, as well as for remote access. Rest assured, no personal data is transmitted.
- Bluetooth: Used to connect with external sensors.
- Read external storage: This permission may be required if you want to open an experiment that is stored on your device.
- Record audio: Required to use the microphone for experiments.
- Location: Used for location-based experiments that rely on GPS data.
- Camera: Used to scan QR codes for configuration of external experiments.
